Y’all, I love to sleep in. There is nothing I love more than lazy weekend mornings when I can wake up, read for a bit and then drift back to sleep.
But recently, I knew that I had to make a change on weekday mornings. I have the tendency to wake up during the night (either by my own accord or from hearing my husband or dogs), and there are times when I would wake up a half hour before my alarm and then reset the time. Sleepy Lauren justified it, but then I’d be running around like a crazy person and then get stuck in traffic.
So I bought an alarm clock that sits on the opposite side of the room (instead of using my phone), and I started setting the alarm for half an hour earlier. Here’s what has changed since I started this routine:
When I’m Up, I’m Up
Once I’ve turned off the alarm and walked across the room to do so, I don’t feel the need to get back into bed. When I used to change the alarm time or hit snooze, I always felt like I wanted to snuggle back under the covers. Now when I’m up, I’m up!
Taking My Time
Instead of running out the room and taking the world’s fastest shower, I’ve been able to appreciate the warm water and come out feeling more refreshed. In addition, even though I usually pick out my outfits the night before, if I change my mind about what I want to wear to work, then I have time to look for another option.
Most mornings I eat breakfast at work, but if I have the hankering for some Panera on the way to the office, I have time to stop and grab a bagel! This is especially true since the traffic is much lighter just a half an hour earlier in the morning!
Don’t get me wrong–if I can sleep in on weekends, I TOTALLY do, but this new weekday routine is working out really well!
I kind of like the idea of having a theme for my blog titles. I wonder what I’ll do next month… Anyway, back to the topic at hand. According to the glorious Facebook, there are many many people who thought that 2016 was just the worst, and they don’t have the highest hopes for the upcoming year. As I read these posts, I thought about how much better it is for your body and soul to focus on the positive things happening in our lives. Sure, not everything can be perfect, and sometimes some truly awful things happen. But after a friend of mind suffered from a horrible medical emergency last week, she said that she just felt lucky to be alive. And so here are some of the things that make me feel lucky:
Some people really don’t get along well with their families, and that makes me sad for them. My mom and I are ridiculously close, and anytime my brother comes to town, I spend almost the entire time laughing. And then there’s the little family that I live with: my precious husband and our adorable pups. Corny as it may sound, I do tear up a little bit thinking about how lucky I am to be married to the love of my life.
When Eliza sings “How lucky we are to be alive right now,” she is talking about the excitement going on with the revolution. However, later in the show, Aaron Burr encourages the women onstage, “Tell your husbands ‘Vote for Burr!'” Because the women couldn’t vote themselves. Wow. It’s so hard to believe that it wasn’t always our given right to play a part in our democratic process. I’m so lucky to live in a time when I don’t have to rely on my husband to vote on our behalf.
In the past few weeks, several of my friends have reported that their babies have come down with a case of RSV, all of them having to be rushed to the hospital. It blows my mind to think that if they lived even 50 years ago, these babies might not have recovered. We are so lucky for all of the medical breakthroughs available and that more and more are coming about each day.
Okay, the first three were pretty serious topics, so here’s my latest bit of luck. I saw Hamilton on Broadway last week!!! I was a little worried that it could never live up to the hype, but boy oh boy, it lived up to it and then some! It was one of the most marvelous shows I’ve ever seen, and everyone around me was crying after the final song.
I had a whole other post planned for today, but every once in a while, Facebook will lead me to just the right subject! Want to know a little more about me? Here’s 36 odd things you might not have known!

With the wedding coming up this weekend, I’m doing my best to think of blog posts, but my mind is filled with, well, wedding stuff. Thank GOODNESS Alyssa started her Back to Blogging Non-Challenge Challenge, which has given me some excellent ideas for prompts! Today I’m going with her first prompt: 3 songs that define my life!
“Somewhere” from West Side Story
My favorite Broadway musical is West Side Story, and I saw it for the first time when I was in the tenth grade. My high school put on a production of this timeless classic, and I immediately fell in love with the music, especially the song “Somewhere.” At the time, I was head over heels for a boy in my grade, but we ran in different circles. Just as I was beginning to find myself become SLIGHTLY more popular (like he was), we moved to Baltimore. In the song “Somewhere,” the actress sings “There’s a place for us…someday, somehow, somewhere.” At the time, I related this to my high school crush, but as I got older, I felt that it referred to my future love…coming someday, somewhere.
“Adelaide’s Lament” from Guys and Dolls
Yes, another Broadway song. I first came across this song in college, when I worked on a production of Guys and Dolls for a local dinner theatre. The song is all about how Adelaide’s boyfriend won’t commit to marrying her, and her anxiety about it gives her “psychosomatic symptoms, difficult to endure” because of it. Let’s get real for a second: this happens to me all the time. When I get anxious, I truly feel as though I’m getting sick or something is wrong with me. Psychosomatic symptoms are frickin real and frickin scary. Luckily for me, sometimes just remembering this song really helps with the symptoms and reminds me that I’m just being anxious.
“I See the Light” from Tangled
About 4 and a half years ago, I went to C’s graduation party. After the party, I was watching Tangled with two of my friends and heard the song “I See the Light.” This song made me think of C and how I was finally “seeing the light”–now that I was looking at him with clear eyes, I knew that I was falling for him. This is why I’m walking down the aisle to this song at our wedding in 5 days 🙂
What songs define your life? I’m linking up with Alyssa!
Happy Tuesday! If you’ve been on Twitter recently, you may have come across the hashtag #StayPeculiar. This is an advertisement for the new movie Miss Peregine’s Home for Peculiar Children, but it also made me stop and think about my own peculiarities. I, for one, believe that we should all embrace the things that make us unique. So here are a few of mine:
No Cheese, Please
I don’t like cheese. Okay, that’s not entirely true. I only like cheese if it’s melted, but if you start to sprinkle unmelted cheese on a taco or add a slice of cheddar to a sandwich, I will do all I can to remove that bit of dairy from my meal.
I’m Afraid to Ride a Bike
Yes, I know how to ride a bike. It took me a long time to learn how to ride because I was scared that I would fall, but once I learned how to do it, I loved it! That is, until about 7 years ago when I was riding on a trail and someone did not properly signal that they were trying to get around me, and we crashed into each other. The man muttered some choice words to me and pedaled off, unharmed. I, however, had to walk my bike back to my car, as my entire leg was scraped up and bleeding. So, yes, I’m now too scared to ride a bike.
Happy Monday everyone! Last week, did you see all the people (including myself) who posted the 3 fictional characters who most reminded them of themselves? Well, it really made me stop and think…which fictional characters are the most like me? I finally narrowed it down to 3 television characters, and I’m happy to report that my friend Dana commented with “Nailed it.”
Ted Mosby from How I Met Your Mother
Ted represents my romantic side. He knows that there’s one true love for him, and he can’t wait to get married and have kids. Up until I met C, I very much had a Ted Mosby-esque outlook on life, knowing that if I just waited, the right person would come along. Thanks for giving me hope, Ted.
Most relatable Ted Mosby quote: “Love is the best thing we do.”
Leslie Knope from Parks and Recreation
Leslie represents my ambitious do-gooder side. She works her hardest for the city of Pawnee, Indiana, just as I’m about to do for occupational therapy patients for the State of Maryland in my new job. She’s also a fiercely loyal friend, and, well, has her clumsy moments. Thanks for keeping me focused, Leslie.
Most relatable Leslie Knope quote: “Hobbies? Organizing my agenda. Wait. That doesn’t sound fun. Jammin’ on my planner!”
Phoebe Buffay from Friends
Phoebe represents my silly side. I may be an uber-planner who stresses out with things are out of sorts, but I do love a good laugh and allowing myself to be nutty. Phoebe also isn’t afraid to dance or sing in public, whether she’s asked to or not…I may have done both of these things. Thanks for keeping me sane, Phoebe.
Most relatable Phoebe Buffay quote: “You want to hear something weird?” “Always!”
Who are the fictional characters that are most like you? Do you think mine fit well?
Happy Monday everyone! I apologize PROFUSELY for being a bad blogger this past week. Okay, maybe not a BAD blogger, but definitely a sporadic one. I thought that the best way to explain my absence would be to use numbers…so here we go.
36: The Age I Am Now
Yes, last Tuesday, on September 6, I turned 36 years old. Kind of hard to believe, since I still feel like a hormonal teenager a lot of the time, but I since 3 and 6 are my two lucky numbers, this has to mean a good year is on the horizon, right?
4: The Number of Evenings in a Row Where We Had Plans
Between the annual Labor Day Crab Feast, two birthday dinners and our weekly trivia night, I spent so many evenings out last week. Was it totally worth it? Yes. Was I exhausted Thursday night? Double yes.
Actually, it’s less than 5. I feel like we have so much ready, but then things come up like, “Did we get a pen for the guest book?” But I could not be more excited!
8: The Number of Minutes Late I Was for the Dentist
Even though my dentist’s office is amazing (massage chair, anyone?), I am not a fan of GOING to the dentist. So I think that I wasn’t preparing myself properly for being on time for my appointment. When I looked at the clock, I realized that I had 15 minutes to be there…and the dentist’s office is about 20 minutes from my house. And the gas light went on in my car. And I got stuck behind a huge truck. But I somehow made it within the 10-minute window, after which I would have needed to reschedule or wait around. Oh and no cavities!
72×84: The Size of Our New Bed
We’re moving on up to a California King Bed! Currently, the 6′ 5″ C tries to fit into our double bed. Not only do his feet hang off the end of the bed, but I am often confined to a sliver of space at the edge of the bed if he curls his knees up or stretches out even slightly. We knew we wanted a bigger bed…and we decided to go for the biggest! We’re having a shop in Quarryville, PA make it for us, and we should be sleeping in great comfort starting in about 8 to 10 weeks!
That’s right…I have a new job! To say that I’m shocked by this is an understatement. I applied a long time ago under the impression that there would be tons of applicants and my chances were ridiculously slim. And yet…I start on the 28th! I’ll really miss working with one of my best gals Macy, but I know that we’ll still talk almost everyday, and she’ll be by my side on my wedding day in less than 5 weeks!
So that’s what’s been keeping me busy…what’s new with you?
Happy Tuesday everyone! Recently, the glorious Brittany from A Healthy Slice of Slice shared a post called “If I’m Being Honest,” and I felt like the idea was right up my alley! So, without further ado, here’s a bit of honesty from me!
If I’m being honest…
I’m out of my MIND excited about my bridal shower this Sunday! Last night, I was talking to one of my bridesmaids and told her that I couldn’t believe that it was finally my turn to be the bride. She told me that I deserve it and that it’s totally my turn! I’ve been so excited about this day that I bought my dress for the event 3 months ago!
If I’m being honest…
I occasionally watch Maury. Does it help that it’s only for the DNA results episodes? Sure, it’s probably fake, but man, the drama is just too hilarious!
As of last month, I have lived in Churchville, Maryland for two years. Some may ask why I chose to live in this smallish rural town. The easy answer: I moved in with C. But if you want to know some more specific reasons why I love living in this town, here ya go:
Who doesn’t love a good cow, am I right? But seriously, my neighbors across the street…are cows. They’re great! They don’t complain, they mind their own business, and occasionally, they’ll let out a big ole MOO when I’m trying to have a phone meeting 😉
Keyes Creamery, the best ice cream ever IMO, is within walking distance of my house! This means that if I’ve just gone on a long run, and it’s a zillion degrees outside, it doesn’t take that much longer to run to Keyes. Not that I would do that…often.
C’s parents and two of his brothers live a few houses away from us. His other brother and his family live about a mile away. Although I’m a little farther from my family, I still love knowing that there is family nearby when we need them. Like when I was really sick a few months ago, C’s mom brought me chicken noodle soup. Cutest thing ever.
So apparently the game that helped decide where many of the Pokestops for Pokemon Go would be decided to put them in churches. I live in Churchville. Go ahead–do the math.
